About Sierra del Escambray National Park

Sierra del Escambray National Park, located in the central part of Cuba, encompasses the Escambray Mountains, covering an area characterized by steep limestone peaks, deep valleys, and an array of waterfalls and rivers. This rugged landscape creates a biodiverse environment rich in endemic flora and fauna, including several rare species of plants, birds, and amphibians. The park's highest point, Pico San Juan, rises to 1,140 meters (3,740 feet) and provides panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and coastline. Historically, the Escambray Mountains have been significant as refuges for indigenous peoples and played important roles during Cuba's colonial and revolutionary periods. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the park for hiking, birdwatching, swimming in natural pools, and exploring small rural communities that preserve traditional Cuban culture. Key landmarks include the Salto del Caburní waterfall, the Wayar cave system, and the river basins feeding into expansive reservoirs within the park. Visitor appeal is enhanced by guided tours, clean freshwater rivers, and relatively low visitor impact compared to more developed tourism sites in Cuba. The ecological importance of the park is marked by extensive tropical forests with pines, oaks, and numerous endemic plant species, alongside protected animal species such as the Cuban trogon and the Cuban solenodon. Sierra del Escambray continues to be a vital conservation area as well as a cultural heritage site, blending natural beauty with deep history and outdoor adventure.
